Indian parents investigated after girl dies from 68-day fast

Indian police are investigating the parents of a 13-year-old girl who died last week after undertaking a religious fast for 68 days.
Police in southern Hyderabad city told BBC Hindi they want to know if Aradhana Samdariya was forced to fast.
Her parents have insisted she voluntarily fasted as prescribed in Jainism, one of the world's most ancient religions.
The case has sparked a debate about the practice of religious fasting in India.

Samsung pauses 'galaxy Note 7' production

Smartphone giant Samsung has reportedly stopped production of its Note 7 phone amid claims that replacement devices are still at risk of catching fire.
News agencies reported Samsung had temporarily halted production after talks with safety regulators.
Samsung told the BBC it was "adjusting the production schedule to ensure quality and safety matters".

US presidential debate: Donald Trump launches ferocious attack on Clintons

Donald Trump has responded to an outcry over his remarks about groping women by launching a blistering attack against Hillary Clinton and her husband.
The Republican nominee denied ever sexually assaulting women, but turned his fire on ex-President Bill Clinton in a bitter US presidential debate.
"There's never been anybody in the history of politics that has been so abusive to women," he said.

Sales of samsung Galaxy Note7 in the Netherlands halted

Oh, Europe, you have no luck with Galaxy Notes, do you? Last year the Old Continent was left hanging, this year it was supposed to get the Galaxy Note7 later than Korea and North America, but mounting issues with the recall have canceled the launch in the Netherlands.

UK Business leaders plead against 'hard' Brexit

A group of major business lobby groups has written an open letter urging the government to preserve barrier free trade with Europe.
The letter is signed by leaders of the CBI and manufacturers' body the EEF.
It says the way in which the UK leaves the EU and on what terms is critical for jobs and investment in the UK.

US election: Hillary Clinton's Wall St speeches published by Wikileaks


Transcripts of private speeches by US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton have been released by the whistle-blowing site Wikileaks.

In one of the extracts, Mrs Clinton told bankers that they were best-placed to help reform the US financial sector.
She also said she favoured "open trade and open borders". Mrs Clinton's main opponent, Donald Trump, has said he wants to renegotiate key trade deals.

Senior Republicans have condemned obscene comments Donald Trump made about women in a 2005 videotape.
In the video, posted by the Washington Post, Mr Trump is heard telling TV host Billy Bush "you can do anything" to women "when you're a star".
The New York businessman bragged about trying to have sex with a married woman as well as kissing and groping others.

Apple awarded $119.6 million in reinstated court decision over Samsung’s infringement

After years of back-and-forth between Apple and Samsung, the US Court finally came to a verdict in the case of Samsung’s accusation of copying a few methods and features from the iPhone. Apple is to be awarded $119.6 million for Samsung’s infringement of patents for slide-to-unlock, autocorrect, and the method used to detect phone numbers for tap-to-call functionality.

Sony Xperia Ear will be available in Japan on November 18 with price revealed

Sony has announced the Japanese pricing and availability information for its Xperia Ear accessory. According to Sony Japan, the device will be released in the country on November 18 and will carry a price tag of around JPY 20,000 (excluding tax).

Alternative medicine treatment puts four-year-old boy in Hospital

The plight of a four-year-old boy who nearly died after his parents gave him 12 alternative medicines has prompted doctors to warn against the treatments.
Doctors at Newham Hospital in east London said the parents were "devastated" that their good intentions had made him so unwell.
The boy took a dozen supplements supposedly to help treat his autism.
The National Autistic Society said it was crucial for doctors to talk through the risks of alternative therapies.

South Africa's Archbishop Desmond Tutu 'wants right to assisted death'

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate and anti-apartheid campaigner said that he did "not wish to be kept alive at all costs", writing in the Washington Post newspaper on his 85th birthday.
Mr Tutu came out in favour of assisted dying in 2014, without specifying if he personally wanted to have the choice.
He was hospitalised last month for surgery to treat recurring infections.

The delayed Oculus Touch controllers for the Oculus Rift VR headset have finally received an official price and release date today. The Oculus Touch will cost $199. You'll be able to pre-order starting on October 10, but shipping will only start on December 6.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 on US Cellular receives Marshmallow 6.0.1 update

US Cellular has started pushing out the Marshmallow update to Samsung Galaxy Note 4 units on its network. 
The update, which bumps the Android version to 6.0.1, brings along all the usual Marshmallow goodies including Doze, Google Now on Tap, and redesigned app permissions.

Fans of Bruce Lee are criticising a new biopic of the late martial arts legend

Birth of the Dragon follows the kung fu star's early years in the US and showcases his controversial fight with master Wong Jack Man in 1964.
Directed by George Nolfi, the movie debuted at the Toronto Film Festival.
But many fans have protested against Lee's portrayal, saying the star took "a subdued role in his own biopic".

Google's smartphone Pixel and Pixel XL have IP53 dust and water resistance

Yesterday Google finally unveiled the Pixel and Pixel XL, its first smartphones. Throughout its event, however, the company never once mentioned whether the two have any sort of dust or water resistance rating. An IP53 certification was rumored last month for the duo, ahead of the announcement.

Yahoo says the email scanning report is 'misleading'

Yahoo has downplayed a report that said it had scanned millions of its users' emails on behalf of the US government.
Reuters made the allegation on Tuesday, saying Yahoo had created special software to comply with a classified directive.
The tech firm said the article was "misleading" but did not explicitly deny that it had carried out such an order in the past.

Rod Temperton, the British songwriter best known for Michael Jackson's Thriller and Rock With You, has died.
Temperton died in London last week at the age of 66 after "a brief aggressive battle with cancer", Jon Platt of Warner/Chappell music publishing said.
Temperton's other hits included Off The Wall and Baby Be Mine for Jackson and Boogie Nights for his band Heatwave.

Hurricane Matthew: US states order evacuation

Hundreds of thousands of people in Florida and South Carolina have been told to evacuate as Hurricane Matthew churns towards the US east coast.
"This is a serious storm," warned President Barack Obama, adding that it would have a "significant" impact on Florida by Thursday morning.
Traffic jams are reported in the city of Charleston, in South Carolina, as residents flee the area.

Nigeria to sell two presidential jets

Nigeria is selling two of its 10 presidential jets in a bid to "cut down on waste", President Muhammadu Buhari's spokesman has said.
Adverts for the Falcon 7X executive jet and Hawker 4000 are to appear in newspapers, Garba Shehu said.
Some of the other presidential aircraft are be handed to the Nigerian air force to boost its operations, he said.

Samsung Galaxy Note7 replacement catches fire on a plane

By now you'd expect a Samsung Galaxy Note7 from the first batch to easily catch fire - after all, that's why the Korean company recalled all 2.5 million units it sold until September 2. On the other hand, you probably wouldn't expect a replacement unit, deemed safe by its maker, to have the same fate.

It is already clear that BlackBerry's third Android phone is on the way. The DTEK 60 featured in a few leaks. But nothing came even close to BlackBerry's own blooper of accidentally publishing the device's full specs on its website.

Samsung officially announced the relaunch of the Galaxy Note7 across the globe. The new batch of phablets is ready and has been shipped to all partners, retailers, and carriers. It should be free of defective batteries, and, hopefully, of stuck S-Pen styluses.

A judge in Texas has rejected a last-ditch legal challenge to halt the final handover of internet naming power from the US government to a non-profit group.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has administered the naming system since 1998.
But from 1 October it will operate without the ultimate oversight of the US government.

US police shot dead another black 'Alfred Olango' after he pointed e-cigarette

Police in California say they shot dead a Ugandan refugee when he pulled an object that turned out to be an e-cigarette from his pocket and pointed it at a police officer.
Dozens of demonstrators have taken to the streets of El Cajon, a suburb of San Diego, in protest at the killing of Alfred Okwera Olango, who was 38.
Mr Olango was killed on Tuesday after officers responded to a call from his sister who said that he needed help.

BlackBerry CEO John Chen confirms the QWERTY keyboard isn’t going no where

BlackBerry has been getting a lot of attention today with the somewhat old news (but now official) that BlackBerry will no longer develop or design smartphones to run on its BlackBerry-skinned version of Android. Every hardship is an opportunity to become better

 Like many towns Enterprise, Alabama has a prominent monument. But the monument in  Enterprise is unlike any other. The statue doesn't recognize a leading citizen; it celebrates the work of a beetle. In the early 1990s, this boll weevil made its way from Mexico to the southern US. Within a few years it had destroyed entire crops of cotton, the primary source of revenue.

Shimon Peres, former Israeli president, dies at age 93

Mr Peres suffered a stroke two weeks ago. His condition had improved before a sudden deterioration on Tuesday.
His son Chemi led tributes to "one of the founding fathers of the state of Israel" who "worked tirelessly" for it.

iOS 10.1 Beta now open to the public, supports Portrait Mode for iPhone 7 Plus

Only a single day after Apple released the iOS 10.1 Beta for developers, the iOS 10.1 Beta is now available for the general public, without the need for a developer account.
The most notable feature of the 10.1 Beta is the addition of “Portrait” mode in the camera interface which is exclusive to the iPhone 7 Plus, since it makes use of the second camera. This mode allows users to make really cool bokeh effects which put focus on the subject, while subtly blurring the background.

Amazon fined £65,000 for trying to fly dangerous goods

Amazon has been fined £65,000 after being found guilty of attempting to ship dangerous goods by air.
The online giant tried to transport lithium-ion batteries and flammable aerosols between 2014 and 2015.
It was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court of causing dangerous goods to be delivered for carriage in an aircraft in breach of air navigation rules.
An Amazon spokesman said: "The safety of the public, our customers, employees and partners is an absolute priority."

Twitter shares soar almost 20%

Shares in Twitter jumped almost 20% after a report said the home of the 140-character tweet had received takeover approaches.
Twitter, which has been the subject of takeover rumours before, is getting closer to a sale, according to the US business news channel CNBC.
Potential suitors include Google and Salesforce.com, the report said.
Twitter's board of directors is open to a deal, which could come by the end of the year, according to CNBC.

Facebook 'overestimated' video viewing

Facebook has overestimated how much video people have watched for the last two years, the firm has admitted.
One advertiser suggested that, in some cases, video viewing statistics had been overestimated by up to 80%.
Facebook's analytics are an important tool for advertisers, who use them to work out how much of their video content is being watched.

West Wing stars reunite for Hillary Clinton

Cast members of The West Wing are to campaign for the US Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in Ohio this weekend.
Richard Schiff, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Dule Hill, Joshua Malina, and Mary McCormack will reunite to help organise events across the state.
The stars of the former hit US political TV drama will appear in towns including Cleveland, Sandusky and Toledo.

Tulsa shooting police officer 'Betty Shelby' charged

A police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black motorist in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been charged with manslaughter, a prosecutor has said.
District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler has filed first-degree manslaughter charges against Officer Betty Shelby.
Ms Shelby shot and killed Terence Crutcher, 40, last week while he was standing next to his broken-down car.

Yahoo breach: Attack hit 500 million users

Yahoo says hackers stole information from about 500 million users in 2014 in what appears to be the largest publicly disclosed cyber-breach in history.
The breach included swathes of personal information including names and emails as well as “unencrypted security questions and answers”.
It did not include any credit card data, the site said, adding it believed the attack was state-sponsored.
In July, Yahoo was sold to US telecoms giant Verizon for $4.8bn (£3.7bn).

Donald Trump 'troubled' by Oklahoma police shooting

Mr Trump says he was "very troubled" by the police shooting of an unarmed black man in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Speaking to a crowd of black pastors at an Ohio church, the Republican nominee said he was "very, very troubled" by the shooting.
Terence Crutcher, 40, was shot dead by a white police officer while standing next to his stalled car last Friday.

EFCC arraigns former Adamawa Governor

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday arraigned former Adamawa State governor, Barrister Bala James Ngillari over N160 million contracts.
Also arraigned were Ibrahim Welye, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Barrister Sanda Lamurde, former finance Commissioner.

Huge blackout after power plant fire in the US territory of Puerto Rico.

Blackout left parts of San Juan in the dark
A big fire at a power plant has left 1.5 million people without electricity in the US territory of Puerto Rico.
The fire affected two transmission lines and caused the collapse of the electricity system across the island, officials say.
Supply is expected to be restored to most areas on Thursday.
